Care & Repair

How to clean moissanite without dulling the setting

A marquise cut moissanite

Moissanite does not need special chemistry. It needs the film of soap and skin oil removed from the underside of the stone, which is where light enters and exits.

The routine

  1. Plug the sink or use a bowl.
  2. Warm water with one drop of mild washing-up liquid.
  3. Soak for 10 minutes.
  4. Brush with a soft toothbrush — the underside of the stone, the gallery, between prongs.
  5. Rinse in clean warm water.
  6. Dry with a lint-free cloth; leave to air for an hour before wearing.

Once a month is enough for most people. If you wear hand cream daily, twice a month.

What to avoid

  • Chlorine and bleach — they attack the alloy in white gold and pit the surface over time.
  • Abrasive toothpaste — it scratches rhodium plating and polished metal.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners on plated or glued pieces — fine for solid gold and moissanite, risky where plating is thin.
  • Steam cleaners on emerald, opal or pearl — not a moissanite problem, but often set alongside.

Plating care

Rhodium on white gold wears at the shank and the prong tips first. When you see a warmer tone at the edges, it is time to re-plate — typically every 12–24 months on a daily-wear ring. Re-plating is a bench service, not a home fix.

Prong checks

Once a month, run a fingernail along the prongs. If a tip catches, stop wearing the ring and have it re-tipped. A lifted prong is how stones get lost.

Storage

Store pieces separately, or in a lined box with dividers. Moissanite at 9.25 will scratch gold and silver if rings are piled together, and it will scratch other stones below 9.

When to bring it in

Loose stone, bent shank, worn prongs, plating gone at the edge, a stone that looks hazy after cleaning. Our repair service covers all of these; quality issues in the first 30 days are free.
