Carat is weight. What changes the look is millimetre spread — and moissanite is lighter than diamond, so the numbers diverge.
Carat is a weight, not a width. Moissanite is less dense than diamond — about 3.21 g/cm³ versus 3.52 — so a 1 ct moissanite is physically larger than a 1 ct diamond. That is why “1 ct equivalent” exists in moissanite listings, and why the phrase is confusing.
Setting seats are cut in millimetres. A round stone of 6.5 mm fits a 6.5 mm seat regardless of what it weighs. When you compare two stones, compare the diameter.
| Round, approx. | Diamond | Moissanite |
|---|---|---|
| 6.5 mm | 1.00 ct | 0.88 ct |
| 7.0 mm | 1.25 ct | 1.10 ct |
| 7.5 mm | 1.50 ct | 1.35 ct |
| 8.0 mm | 1.85 ct | 1.65 ct |
| 9.0 mm | 2.75 ct | 2.45 ct |
| 10.0 mm | 3.80 ct | 3.35 ct |
Figures are approximate and vary with cut proportions — a shallow cut spreads wider for the same weight.
At the same carat, an oval or pear covers more finger length than a round; an emerald cut covers more area but reads smaller because the corners are cut. A marquise is the most “spread per carat” of the classic shapes.
A halo adds 1.5–2 mm of visual diameter without adding centre-stone weight. If the brief is “bigger on the hand” and the budget is fixed, a halo around a 7 mm stone usually beats a bare 8 mm stone on cost.
Any listing that gives only carats is hiding the number that matters. We list the millimetre size on the quote and match the seat to the stone. Loose moissanite →
