Lab-grown sapphire vs natural sapphire: colour, hardness and cost

A step-cut blue stone

Sapphire is corundum — aluminium oxide with trace elements that create colour. Lab-grown sapphire is the same crystal, grown from a melt, and it grades 9 on the Mohs scale exactly like the mined stone.

What is identical

  • Hardness (9) and toughness — suitable for daily-wear rings.
  • Refractive index (1.76–1.77) and lustre.
  • Response to heat and most cleaning methods.

What differs

Colour consistency. Natural sapphires vary in tone and saturation; matching a pair is work. Lab-grown stones can be produced in consistent runs, so a matched pair or a suite is easier and cheaper. That consistency is also how laboratories detect them — natural stones have zoning and inclusions that lab-grown ones lack.

Price. Lab-grown sapphire is a fraction of the natural price at the same size and colour. The gap is largest for “ideal” blue, where natural stones command a premium.

Certification. Natural sapphires are graded by laboratories such as GRS, AIGS or GIA, with origin reporting. Lab-grown sapphires are usually sold with a manufacturer's specification rather than an origin report.

The colour question

“Cornflower”, “royal blue” and “padparadscha” are trade descriptions, not standards. Ask for a photograph in daylight and a video under both daylight and incandescent light, because sapphire changes tone dramatically between the two.

Which to buy

  • Lab-grown if you want a specific colour, a matched pair, or a large stone at a sensible price — and you accept that resale is limited.
  • Natural if origin and rarity matter, and you are buying with a recognised report.

What we stock

Lab-grown sapphire in blue, pink, yellow and padparadscha tones, calibrated and matched in-house. We will send measurements and a daylight video before you commit. Lab-grown colour stones →
